Is Shubman Gill being sent back to India due to disciplinary reasons?

Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, Rinku Singh, and Khaleel Ahmed accompanied the Indian team as reserve players for the T20 World Cup 2024. In the event of an injury requiring replacement players from India, it would have caused delays. Therefore, to avoid any such situation, the BCCI included all four players in the 15-member squad.

As the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 concludes for India on Saturday, it is likely that opener Shubman Gill and pacer Avesh Khan will be sent back, considering  Yashasvi Jaiswal, the third opener, is already part of the squad, there is less need for Shubman Gill's presence.

Additionally, the Super 8 matches will take place in the West Indies, where spinners are anticipated to play a significant role. India's main squad already consists of four pacers, including Hardik Pandya. Therefore, Avesh Khan may return to India along with Shubman Gill.

Is Shubman being sent back to India due to disciplinary reasons?

There have been rumours on social media in the past few days suggesting that Gill is being sent back to India due to "disciplinary issues." However, India's batting coach has refuted these rumours, stating that everything was pre-planned.

As Indian Bating Coach stated - This plan was set from the start. When Indian team arrived in the US, four players were scheduled to travel together. Then, two would be released, and two would continue with us to the West Indies. So, this plan was established since the team selection. Indian  team management just sticking to that,"

Indian Batting coach Vikaram Rathour stated during a press conference. Commenting on the India vs Canada washout, Rathour explained that the decision was made in the best interests of both teams. He admitted they would have preferred some match practice before heading into the Super 8 stage. "Some reserve players are being released.

Naturally, there's concern when playing in less-than-ideal conditions. The decision to play or not was in the hands of the match officials. As a team, we didn't have any input in that decision. However, if the game had gone ahead, it would have been beneficial for us. We were eager to play and put on a good performance," he added. "There's always concern when playing in such conditions, as there's a risk of injuries. Being already in the Super 8s, we don't want any setbacks before the crucial part of the tournament," he further emphasized.

The Super 8 stage is set to kick off on June 19 and will run until June 25 (IST). Semi finals are scheduled for June 27, followed by the final on June 29. During the Super 8 stage, each team will play three matches against every other team in their group.

India has qualified for the Super 8 stage and will play against Afghanistan on Thursday, June 20th. As of now, India will play against Afghanistan and likely Australia next. The third team to face India will be determined after the completion of the league matches.
